Ingredients
Scale
1 pound ground beef (80/20 blend recommended for juiciness)
4 slices of American cheese (or cheddar for a sharper taste)
4 burger buns (brioche or sesame for a touch of sweetness)
Salt and freshly ground black pepper
1 tablespoon vegetable oil (or any high smoke point oil)
Fresh lettuce leaves (crisp romaine or butter lettuce feel fantastic)
Slices of tomato (heirloom varieties add color and flavor)
Pickles (dill or bread and butter for a sweet touch)
Condiments of choice (mayo, mustard, and ketchup work great)
Instructions
Start by gathering all your ingredients and prepping them. Slice your tomatoes and pickles, wash the lettuce, and set everything aside.
Take the ground beef and divide it into 4 equal portions, about ¼ pound each. Shape it lightly into balls.
Pour vegetable oil into a large skillet or griddle over medium-high heat. Let it heat until shimmering.
Place the beef balls into the hot skillet, leaving space in between. Using a spatula, smash each ball down into a thin patty, about ½ inch thick. Season with salt and pepper.
Cook the patties for about 2-3 minutes until the edges are brown and crispy. Flip them and immediately place a slice of cheese on each. Cook for another 1-2 minutes until the cheese is melty.
Toast your burger buns cut-side down in the skillet until golden brown.
Spread condiments on the buns. Layer on the lettuce, cheesy patties, tomato slices, and pickles. Cap it with the top bun.
