Ingredients

Scale
  • 12 lasagna noodles (whole wheat for a healthier option)
  • 2 cups ricotta cheese (or cottage cheese for a lighter choice)
  • 3 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 pound ground beef (substitute with turkey or plant-based meat)
  • 1 can (28 ounces) crushed tomatoes
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 2 teaspoons dried basil (or fresh for a brighter flavor)
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 egg (optional, for binding ricotta)

  • Instructions

  • Begin by cooking the lasagna noodles according to package instructions. Drain and lay them out flat to prevent sticking.
  • In a large skillet over medium heat, sauté the chopped onion and minced garlic until fragrant. Add the ground beef and cook until browned. Stir in the crushed tomatoes, dried basil, oregano, salt, and pepper. Let it simmer for about 15 minutes.
  • In a bowl, combine ricotta cheese, half of the grated Parmesan, and the optional egg.
  • In a 9×13 inch baking dish, spread a layer of meat sauce on the bottom. Place four noodles on top, followed by half of the ricotta mixture, a sprinkle of mozzarella, and another layer of sauce. Repeat, finishing with noodles, the remaining sauce, and a generous layer of mozzarella and leftover Parmesan.
  • Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake at 375°F (190°C) for 30 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes until the cheese is bubbly and golden brown.
  • After removing the lasagna from the oven, let it cool for 10-15 minutes before slicing and serving.
