1 pound ground beef (or ground turkey)
1 cup mushrooms, sliced
1 medium onion, thinly sliced
8 slices of Swiss cheese (or Gruyère)
4 slices of rye bread (sourdough optional)
2 tablespoons butter (or olive oil)
Salt and pepper to taste
Optional: garlic powder or fresh garlic
Instructions
Gather all your ingredients. Ensure your mushrooms are sliced and onions are ready.
In a skillet over medium heat, melt 1 tablespoon of butter. Add onions and sauté until translucent, about 5 minutes. Add mushrooms, salt, pepper, and garlic powder if using. Cook until mushrooms are browned, about 5-7 minutes. Set aside.
In a bowl, season the ground beef with salt and pepper. Form four equal patties with a small indentation in the center.
In the same skillet, add the remaining butter and cook the patties for 4-5 minutes on one side. Flip and add Swiss cheese on top. Cook for another 4-5 minutes until cheese is melted and beef is cooked to desired doneness.
Toast the rye bread slices. Layer one slice with onions and mushrooms, add the cheeseburger patty, then top with another slice of bread.
Wipe the skillet clean, melt more butter, and grill the assembled sandwich for 3-4 minutes on each side until golden brown.
Remove the sandwich, slice in half, and serve with optional sides.
